Arriving in 2016 with a golden ticket to study Geography at Loughborough, and ironically no idea how to get there, I quickly found my home in the Welfare and Diversity section of LSU. In my first year, I joined the Nightline service, and from then things snowballed. Before I knew it I was a Coordinator, and before I knew it I was Welfare and Diversity Vice-Chair. I know what you’re thinking, ‘but Matt where do you go from there?’
What do I do?
As the Welfare & Diversity Executive Officer, I oversee the work of the 9 associations that make up Welfare and Diversity. No matter where you are in your university or college journey, Welfare and Diversity is here to support you and ensure you feel part of the Loughborough family. There are so many different opportunities you will always be able to find something you are passionate about!
Oh and another thing, I’m also LSU’s lead on mental health and any topic or issue affecting students. I look forward to welcoming you to one of our many events or campaigns during the year.
Over the next 12 months, I want to put you and the rest of the Loughborough Family at the heart of everything we, your Exec, do:
The start of the new academic year can be such a busy time for everyone, but no matter who you are and where you come from I want to make sure you have the most enjoyable Freshers possible. So we've been working on creating a Freshers for everyone, including events that don't always need alcohol to be the centre of attention. Whether it's relaxing with your friends at the Loughborough Fringe Festival, or tackling the JC's Pub Quiz, you can guarantee Freshers has got something for you in it!
Welfare & Diversity, and the topics it covers
Welfare & Diversity is something that is a part of each and every one of our lives here at Loughborough, even if you're not directly involved in the section. Your voice is the one that deserves to be heard! I and the whole of the section are here to listen to and support you no matter where you are in your Loughborough journey. Keep your eyes peeled for how you could even become a Welfare & Diversity Champion!
When I'm not trying to make the world a better place, you'll find me running, probably to the gym, which makes lots of room for my most indulgent of hobbies, cooking! If you're really nice I might even bring you some snacks.
If you fancy a chat, about honestly anything, then I'm your guy! Welfare & Diversity in its nature is such a diverse topic that everyone is a part (even if you didn't want to be (sorry not sorry). So our door is always open to chat, debate and challenge life! There's no such thing as a wrong opinion.
I've been called approachable, understanding and easy to talk to. But these were all by my mum, so why don't you come to find out for yourself.
Been there done that advice:
University is the perfect time to throw yourself into something you never even knew existed, just to give it a go and do something new, however, don't sign up to too much! Don't go burning yourself out by the end of the first term, you've got 3 years, so you don't have to do it all at once.
